Nations having inclusive governments tend to survive. Under such a system the population has rights and freedoms while individuals are allowed to retain profits from their enterprises and innovations.
Under an extractive form of government, populations are denied rights and freedoms while power and wealth are held by a few elite individuals. Such nations do not last long and in the attempts to survive such governments often engage in democide (mass murder of the public opposition)
Factors that may act to sustain or delay either of the above said results are adequate "key" resources, geography, and culture as well as advanced technical progress. In the case of the PRC (China), an extractive government has delayed failure using economic reforms. India has an inclusive form of government weakened by overpopulation and class struggles. Thus, the above inclusive and/ or extractive rules are not always hard and fast.
To survive any threat/ hazard study the factors and actions needed to avoid all negatives possible for the specific circumstances.
